La Catedral original de Segovia estaba ubicada cerca del Alcazar pero fue destruída por los comuneros quienes creían que éste era un buen punto para proteger las reliquias religiosas y fue reubicada en Plaza Mayor mas tarde. La nueva Catedral fue diseñada por Juan Gil de Hontañón y continuada por su hijo Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón en el siglo XVI y fue dedicada a la Virgen María.
Tiene tres naves altas (de 33m de alto por 50m de ancho y 105m de largo), una girola de casi 90m y varios vitrales preciosos. Su estilo entero es Gótico salvo el domo ya que fue construido casi un siglo después por Pedro de Bizuela.
El retablo del altar de la Catedral fue una obra hecha por Francisco Sabatini y decorado con los santos segovianos de Frutos (se acuerdan de San Frutos?!), Valentín, Geroteo y Engracia (un nombre común en Segovia). El coro fue hecho por el también en estilo gótico.
La Catedral entera está llena de arte, tantas que podríamos decir que la misma Catedral es una pieza de arte. Cada esquina parece tener una historia que contar y es muy especial poder ver tantos cuartos con estilo propio y sus mini colecciones de arte. No importa cuan bello pueda ser alguna vez el interior de cualquier edificio o estructura, nada se podrá jamás comparar con la inmejorable belleza de ésta estructura por fuera.
Segovia’s original Cathedral was located near the Alcazar but was ruined by the comuneros who believed the Cathedral was the city’s best place to protect the holy relics and relocated to Plaza Mayor. The new Cathedral was designed by Juan Gil de Hontañon and continued by Rodrigo Gil de Ontañon in the XVI C and dedicated to Virgin Mary.
It has three tall vaults (33m high by 50m wide and 105m long), an ambulatory bell tower (90m high) and many beautiful glass windows. Its style is late Gothic whilst the dome isn’t as it was built almost a century later in 1630 by Pedro de Brizuela.
The dos of the cathedral was carved by Francisco Sabatini and decorated with Segovia’s saints of Frutos (remember San Frutos?!), Valentín, Geroteo and Engracia (a common name in Segovia I found). It’s choir was also done by him and has gothic style as well.
The whole Cathedral is full of artwork, so much you can call the whole thing a masterpiece. Every corner seems to have a story to tell and its very special to see how there are many rooms with a style and mini art collection. As beautiful as any building could ever be inside, nothing will ever compare to the outstanding beauty the building has on its outside.
