Jóvenes Embajadores de Segovia

Uno de los mejores poetas de la historia literaria española tuvo su hogar en Segovia y ése es Antonio Machado. Como cada año se celebrará homenaje a él y espero no se lo pierdan.

La casa está en Calle Desamparados 5, dentro del casco antiguo de la ciudad y, como para esperarse, ¡es preciosa! Lo especial de esta casa es que está llena de sus retratos y fotos de sus momentos por Segovia. Me encanta ir a casas-museo que se pueden visitar por dentro porque se aprende la historia de una persona o periodo de una distinta manera.

Antonio Machado fundó la Universidad Popular en Segovia junto con otras personas. La misma Universidad compró la casa del fallecido poeta y la convirtió en museo. Al haber tenido tanto prestigio el artista el museo está muy bien mantenido y es un imperdible para los amantes de la literatura.

One of the best poets of Spanish literary artists had a home in Segovia and every year the city celebrates a tribute to him, Antonio Machado.

His house in Segovia is in Calle Desamparados 5, in the city centre, and as one can anticipate, it’s beautiful. What’s special about this house is that it’s full of his own portraits and photos of his moments passed in Segovia. I love visiting home-museums that allow you to visit inside and learn about history or a person from a different perspective.

Antonio Machado founded with others Universidad Popular in Segovia. The same University purchased his home after his passing to make into a museum. Since Machado has such an important name the museum is extremely well taken care of and is a must for lovers of literature.

La bellísima Iglesia de Vera Cruz está hecha en estilo románico y se encuentra en el mejor sitio para ver Segovia. Está sobre una pequeña montaña dónde siempre hay gente paseando y es lindo pasar las tardes por sus vistas.

La Iglesia tiene una torre, una sacristía y tres ábsides. La torre tiene una campana lindísima que se puede ver por las ventanas de ella misma. En la parte baja de la torre se veneraba una reliquia de la Cruz pero ésta fue trasladada a Zamarramala después de varios intentos de robo.

Los Caballeros de la Orden de Malta celebran actos religiosos en esta Iglesia por lo bonita que es, en especial en Viernes Santo. Vale la pena visitarla y pasear por sus al rededores. Visítenla!

The beautiful Romanic style Church of Vera Cruz is located in the best place to see Segovia from. It´s on a small mountain where you can always find people walking and is a great place to spend afternoons.

The Church has a tower, a sacristy and three apses. The tower has a very nice bell you can see from it’s windows. There was an important relic of the Cross in the Church that had been there for decades before they had to move it to Zamarramala after various attempted thefts.

The Knights of the Order of Malta celebrate religious acts in this Church because of how truly pretty it is, especially on Holy Friday. It is very worth it to visit it and walk around the area. You’ll love it!

Saliendo por la calle de la Iglesia Vera Cruz se llega a un precioso barrio llamado Zamarramala, donde se celebra Santa Águeda, día en que las mujeres casadas y viudas gobiernan durante todo el día. Habrá varias actividades, entre ellas una procesión religiosa, comida, y actividades tradicionales.

En Segovia las actividades tradicionales suelen ser las más bonitas. Siempre hay bailes distintos que ver por las calles y en las tarimas del acueducto. En Santa Águeda hay bailes y actividades particulares como la quema del Pelele y los premios a los hombres quienes sean conocidos como aquellos que defienden los derechos de las mujeres. ¡Desde luego tienen trajes para la ocasión que no se pueden perder!

La quema del Pelele es de un muñeco representado por un hombre. Es tradición que las mujeres hagan esto para burlarse de su rol en la sociedad y sentirse libres. No se pierdan la celebración, está muy cerca y las vistas de Segovia son maravillosas.

The street that goes up from Vera Cruz Church leads to a beautiful village called Zamarramala where Santa Agueda is celebrated. Married and widow women get to govern for that day. There will be multiple festivities ranging from a religious procession to food and different traditional activities.

Traditional activities in Segovia tend to be the prettiest. There are always different dances to watch on the streets or in the Acqueduct’s stage. There are dances and particular activities in Santa Agueda like the burning of the Pelele and the prizes to men who are known to be supportive of women’s rights. There will undoubtedly be dancing gowns you don’t want to miss!

The burning of the Pelele is of a man-looking doll. It is tradition for women to do this while leaving household chores aside and taking their role in society as one with more freedom for a moment and feel free. Don’t miss the celebration, it’s very close and the views of Segovia are amazing!

Como en todos los sueños toca despertarse, a mi me toca despertar de Aruba. Es complicado despedirte de un lugar tan maravilloso, no únicamente por las increíbles playas y el eterno verano, sino también por ser un lugar que me ha acogido como si fuera uno más.

Cuando llegué vaticinaba que había sido una mala decisión de la que me iba a arrepentir. Cualquiera que me conozca sabe que soy bastante inquieto y pensé que la isla se me quedaría pequeña pronto. Además, el calor al principio fue un mal aliado. La universidad difícil. Y la comida tampoco iba ser mi cup of tea.

Sin embargo, que equivocado estaba. Todos mis temores se convirtieron en muestras de que Aruba era el mejor destino posible. Aprendí a valorar las hipnóticas puestas de sol, la fina arena blanca y el agua cristalino mezclándose con el coral. Aquí no podías viajar muy lejos, pero en cambio había una estación que siempre marcaba verano como próximo destino. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Aunque lo mejor que me llevo de esta experiencia, además de los recuerdos inolvidables, es la gente que he conocido por el camino, tanto arubianos, como de otras partes, y a los que aprovecho para mandar un saludo y recordar que los veré pronto. Esta etapa no hubiera sido ni la mitad de buena sin su presencia.

Otro detalle a destacar es la oportunidad que se me dio desde Segovia para representarlos, la cual he intentado aprovechar al máximo. Me ha hecho aprender y divertirme. Incluso ha hecho que conociera a gente importante, como miembros de la UNESCO o el Primer Ministro del país. Antes llevaba Segovia en la cabeza, en los recuerdos, ahora la llevo en el corazón, y es que, después del proyecto embajadores siento que siempre seré un embajador de esta fantástica ciudad.

Así que, además de un post de despedida, me gustaría que fuera un post de agradecimiento. Agradecimiento a Aruba, Segovia y toda la gente que voy cruzándome por el camino y que hacen aún mejores a estos lugares.

As in all dreams there is a moment for waking up, so is the turn for waking up of Aruba. It seems difficult to say goodbye to a wonderful place, not only because of the stunning beaches or the endless summer, but also because it is a place that embraced me like if I was originally from there.

When I arrived I thought that it was a bad decision having moved to such a small island. If you know me you will know that I am a restless person, so I thought the island was maybe too small for me. In addition, the hot weather was not a good allied, the university quite difficult and the food was not my cup of tea.

However, I was completely wrong. All my fears were transformed in arguments that reflected that Aruba was the best destination ever. I started to value the hypnotic sunsets, the thin golden sand and the clear water mixed with the corals. Here you cannot travel a lot but there will be always a destination called Summer. What else could I ask for?

But the best I took on my way back are without a doubt all the new friends I met along the road. Some of them were Arubians, but actually I met new people from all over the world, and I would like to take advantage to express my gratitute to them, because without them my experience wouldn´t have been so amazing. I am pretty sure that I will meet them soon.

Another thing I have to underline is the opportunity that they gave to me for represent the city of Segovia. I have had a lot of fun and I learnt too much. I have even met important people like the Primer Minister of the Island and some personalities of UNESCO. I used to have Segovia in my head and memories, but from now on I  will carry this city in my heart, and after the Ambassador Project I will feel such an ambassador of this fantastic city forever.

So, apart of been a farewell post, I would like this also to be a thanks post. Thanks to Segovia, Aruba and all the incredible people I am meeting and make these places even better.
