Jóvenes Embajadores de Segovia

El viernes pasado tuve la oportunidad de participar en el Global Village de la universidad. Este evento, fuera de ser un evento muy divertido, fue un evento que engloba el sentimiento y lo que es la comunidad de la universidad: una Aldea Global. Os cuento…

El evento tomó lugar en el Aula Magna, un espacio que es verdaderamente maravilloso por su esplendor y valor arquitectónico. Este espacio se convirtió en un espacio lleno de vida, con banderas de 20 países que decidieron participar, colgadas de las paredes, en los puestos de cada país o colgadas de hilos entre paredes. Cada país que participó tuvo el espacio para tener un puesto en el cual se presentaban tapas con alimentos típicos del país al igual que datos curiosos de cada uno. En mi caso, participé con una amiga en el puesto de Francia.

El evento se abrió a todos los estudiantes del IE, incluyendo los estudiantes del Campus Madrid. Al entrar, se le daba a cada participante un “pasaporte” que tenían que sellar en cada país que visitaran y así entrar en una tómbola con diversos premios. Mientras que la gente se paseaba por el Aula, visitando países y probando su gastronomía, había actuaciones por estudiantes también representando sus países. Se pudo ver actuaciones como bailes típicos o contemporáneos, canciones/canto, poesía, etc.

El evento fue una personificación muy fuerte de lo que es ser un estudiante del IE Campus Segovia. Al caminar o platicar con gente en los pasillos o en la cafetería, se puede ver, escuchar y sentir una comunidad verdaderamente internacional. Este campus cuenta con más de 80 nacionalidades, muchos casos siendo como el mío donde tenemos múltiples nacionalidades por estudiantes. Esto crea un mezcla de culturas que da una riqueza muy grande tanto en clase como en las interacciones más personales.

Para mí, este fue un evento muy gratificante por muchas razones.  Me dio la oportunidad de explorar y compartir un poco de mi cultura con el resto de mis compañeros de la universidad, compartiendo gastronomía típica pero tal vez menos conocida/reconocida que las crêpes, caracoles, ancas de rana o el queso con vino, pero también con datos que a lo mejor no son conocidos por los demás. También me dio la oportunidad de conocer mejor todas las nacionalidades que existen en mi universidad, al igual que un poco de su cultura. Me fue muy espectacular ver ciertas actuaciones con bailes que desconocía, pero por la energía y la felicidad de los participantes. Fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora.

Tengo que decir que fue un evento que me provocó una sensación/emoción muy bonita. Fue un sentirme conectado e identificado con mi identidad de ciudadano del mundo que digo que soy.

Last Friday I had the opportunity of participating in IE’s Global Village. This event was not only a lot of fun, but and event that encompasses the feeling and the “definition” of what IE Campus Segovia is: a Global Village. Let me tell you about it…

The event took place in the Aula Magna, a space that is truly wonderful due to it’s magnificence and it’s architectural features. This space was filled with life, with flags from 20 countries hanging from the walls, the tables and from threads between pillars. Each country which participated had a booth in which they were allowed to present small samples of a traditional food as well as fun facts from their country. This time, I was invited to participate in the booth for France.

The event was open to all IE students, including students from the Madrid Campus. At the entrance, each attendant was given a “passport” to be stamped in each country they would interact with. People who would complete their passport would then get to entre a raffle with different prices available. While people would walk around the room, visiting countries and tasting their cuisines, various performances representing countries would take place. These included things such as traditional or contemporary dances, songs, poetry, etc.

The whole experience was a personification of what it is to be a student at IE Campus Segovia. Walking and talking with people in the halls or the cafeteria, one can see, hear, and feel a truly international community. The campus has more than 80 nationalities, and many students, like me, have multiple nationalities. This creates a mix of cultures that largely enriches both discussion in class as well as personal interactions with classmates.

This event was truly a gratifying experience. It gave me the opportunity to further explore and share my culture with my classmates. In particular, I made sure to cook dishes that are perhaps not as well known as the typical crepes, snails, frog legs or cheese and wine. It also gave me the opportunity to get to know other cultures through their food, facts, and of course performances full of energy and happiness. It was a very enriching event.

I have to say that this event further fueled in me a feeling which I am very familiar with: being a citizen of the world.

La embajada en Kettlewell Skipton llega a su fin. Esta 5ª edición del proyecto Jóvenes Embajadores, que estaba teniendo lugar en Inglaterra de la mano de la joven estudiante de Cocina y Gastronomía Paula de Julián, se interrumpe varias semanas antes por motivos laborales.

Paula nos ha transmitido que, dado el volumen de trabajo que tiene en estas fechas en el hotel donde desarrolla sus prácticas, no podrá compatibilizar el proyecto con su practicum.

Desde Turismo de Segovia entendemos que su formación es lo primero y desde aquí animamos a Paula a que siga trabajando por la gastronomía segoviana. Estamos seguros de que elevará la gastronomía de nuestra ciudad a lo más alto y, aunque no se haya podido desarrollar el proyecto Jóvenes Embajadores del Patrimonio Mundial como estaba previsto, nosotros consideramos a Paula igualmente embajadora porque sabemos que nuestra gastronomía está en buenas manos.

No me puedo creer que el tiempo aquí pase tan deprisa. Hace apenas unos días estaba haciendo la maleta en Segovia, pensando qué debía llevarme.

En el hotel, nuestro jefe nos da mucha libertad para hacer propuestas novedosas, por eso, hemos decidido crear un menú específicamente español que tendrá platos típicos de algunos de los rincones del país.

Concretamos en que dentro de poco podríamos hacer el menú español, pero primero había que pensar en todos los platos que querríamos incluir y quedó algo así:

Todavía es una idea, no sabemos si nos darán luz verde para poder llevarla a cabo pero tenemos mucha ilusión! Además, al haber ya en el hotel una «noche italiana», tenemos más posibilidades de que nos dejen hacerlo.

Aparte, dando una vuelta por los restaurantes y hoteles de la zona, estuve hablando con la manager de un restaurante cercano y estuve enseñándole un poco de mi ciudad! Gracias a que este pueblo acoge muy bien a todo el mundo, me dejó darle unos folletos sobre Segovia.

Esperemos que dentro de unos días podamos llevar nuestra idea a cabo!

I can´t believe that time is running this fast, a few days ago I was deciding which things I would be taking to England. In the hotel, our boss gives us freedom to do whatever we want (always with exceptions, of course) that´s why we have decided to create a whole Spanish menu for the customers. It has dishes from all over the country.

We concreted that son we could do the Spanish menú but first we had to create the menú, and here it is:

It is an idea yet, because we are not sure if they are going to let us put this into practice. Furthermore, as they have an Italian night, there are more chances to have the Spanish one.

Apart from that, I have visited some places like restaurants in the village and  met one woman who accepted talking to me about Segovia and took my liflets. She felt really interested on my speech that she kept some in the display.

Let´s hope we can make ths opportunity happen!

Estando aquí me doy cuenta de que los días se pasan volando ¡en todo momento me siento como si estuviera en casa! Mis compañeros de cocina se encargan de ser nuestros «profesores»,  nos enseñan cómo elaborar todos los platos, además de todo lo relacionado con el mundo de la cocina.

Al principio tuve pequeñas dificultades con el vocabulario porque se utilizan términos muy específicos, pero me acostumbré muy pronto y ahora ya me manejo con mucha soltura.

En cuanto a la comida, me he dado cuenta de que en Inglaterra tienen una dieta muy distinta a la nuestra. En Segovia tenemos una base de sofrito que usamos para la mayor parte de las recetas y también se utilizan muchas especias. Además, tenemos una dieta muy variada, comemos carnes, pescados, verduras, etc. Sin embargo, aquí preparan todo días antes y a la hora de servir lo único que hay que hacer es calentar el género y emplatar, todo está preparado días antes. La comida se basa en alimentos preparados, que podríamos decir que no son muy saludables si los comes a diario.

Por todo esto que os cuento, mi compañera y yo decidimos que era hora de mostrarles cómo se come en España. El fin de semana pasado preparamos dos paellas para el personal del hotel. Fue entonces cuando las profesoras pasamos a ser nosotras, mostrando a nuestros compañeros cómo se hace la receta paso a paso.

Para que conozcan un poco más de dónde venimos, llenamos el expositor con folletos sobre Segovia. Hablando con Liz, una manager de la empresa, me contó que habían trabajado ya aquí personas de todas las nacionalidades y que la cocina española tiene mucho éxito en Kettlewell.

Ojalá pronto podamos organizar una «noche española» dentro del menú del hotel y seguir cocinando platos segovianos. ¡Pronto os lo contaré!

I have been here only for a few weeks and it feels like yesterday when I first came. I feel like home here. My workmates are my teachers, showing me how everything works and how to cook every single meal they offer.

At the very beginning I had some problems with vocabulary, but as time went by I got udes to and I started to communicate in a proper way.

Talking about food, I quickly realised that they have a very different diet. On one hand, Segovia has basic ingredients which are used in many recipes with other spices. Furthermore, we have many varied food like vegetables, meat, fish, legumes…

On the other hand, in England they cook with ingredients which have been prepared before, and at service you just have to heat it in the microwave and that´s it. This way, everything is prepared but this food is treated with canned food which is not too healthy.

Because of that, my classmate and I decided that we could cook paella to show them a little bit of Spanish cuisine. We prepared two paellas for the staff. We became teachers in that moment and they were able to learn a bit more about us.

For them to know where we come from, I left some brochures in the display. While talking with Liz, one of the business managers, I discovered that some Spanish workers had been working here before; she also told me that Spanish dishes are very welcome in this village.

We are looking forward to including the Spanish night in the menú so that we can prepare all sort of meals including, of course, Segovia´s meals.

Por fin llegó el día de viaje. El día 18 me embarqué con mi compañera en una aventura que no se olvidará fácilmente. Estaremos como cocineras en un hotel de un pueblito en el Reino Unido. Al principio sonaba como una misión imposible, pero hasta los imposibles se pueden cumplir.

Cuando llegamos al hotel, todos nos recibieron con los brazos abiertos desde un primer momento, y nos trataron como un compañero/a más. Nada más llegar,  nos fuimos a recorrer el pueblo para descubrir algunos de sus tantos encantos. Y nos dimos cuenta de que Kettlewell y Segovia tampoco distan tanto en cuanto al paisaje.

El pueblo se encuentra en un valle situado  en la parte sur de Yorkshire. Aquí, como todos sabemos, el clima es bastante apagado casi todo el año pero lo que de verdad enamora son los paisajes tal verdes que tiene y el contacto con la naturaleza.

Pero no termina aquí, además de estos paisajes maravillosos, cuentan con una gastronomía muy diferente a la nuestra, que se basa en otro estilo de vida. Por ejemplo, no hay plato que no lleve algo frito, en general.

Mi misión, a partir de ahora, será mostrarles la gastronomía española centrándome, cómo no, en Segovia. Mientras, os iré mostrando cómo va mi aventura. ¿Os venís conmigo?

At last!

Finally the travel day arrived. The 18^th March I started a brand new adventure with one of my classmates. We will be cooking in a small hotel in the UK. At first, it sounded like an impossible mission, but even impossible can come true.

When we arrived at the hotel, everyone greeted us from the very beginning and treated us like one of them. The first thing we did there was walking around the village and discover some of the charming places here. It was then when we realized that Kettlewell and Segovia are quite similar when talking about landscape.

The village is located in a valley in the south of Yorkshire.  Here, as we all know, the weather is basically grey most part of the year, but what really makes you fall in love of this place are those green landscapes and the constant contact with the nature.

Well… not over yet. Apart from the landscape, they have a gastronomy which is based in other way of living. For example, every dish has to go with something fried.

My mission from now on is to show them the Spanish gastronomy, focusing on Segovia´s. Meanwhile, I will be showing you a little bit of my adventure. Would you like to come with me?

Por primera vez, Segovia cuenta con una Joven Embajadora del Patrimonio Mundial que, además de promocionar la riqueza patrimonial y cultural de la ciudad, dará a conocer la gastronomía de Segovia.

Ella es Paula de Julián García, segoviana y estudiante de 2º curso del grado medio de Cocina y Gastronomía en el centro Felipe VI. Durante tres meses, del 19 de marzo al 21 de junio, realizará prácticas en un hotel de Kettlewell Skipton, North Yorkshire (Reino Unido), con una beca Erasmus.

¡Enhorabuena Paula!

Dentro de las cosas que más nos preguntan cuando se está considerando venir a estudiar a Segovia es la vida nocturna de la ciudad. ¿Qué tal es? ¿Qué se hace? ¿Hay mucho que hacer? En esta entrada, explicaré como se vive la vida nocturna para el estudiante, en particular el estudiante del Instituto de Empresas (IE).

Se puede decir que la vida nocturna, por así decirlo, empieza generalmente por la cena, a veces un poco antes si se queda para tomar unos tragos antes. Dentro de lo que viene siendo esto, y la vida nocturna a grandes rasgos, se puede decir que hay dos grandes tendencias: la primera siendo quedar en casa de alguien, o quedar fuera con amigos. Cuando se trata de cenar fuera, lo más común es ir a los locales alrededor de la Plaza Mayor, ya sean los bares de tapas o restaurantes de los alrededores. De aquí, lo más común es posteriormente quedar por unas cervezas en casa de alguien. En noches en las cuales se sale de discoteca, salimos a bares después de esto. Lugares como son el Sito, el Saxo, Karma, o La Guagua. De ahí salimos a discoteca, ya sea pasando primero por el Destino, o simplemente terminar la noche en el Canavan’s-Theatre, o como se le llama en el IE, el “Irish”.

Yo soy una persona de conversaciones y por lo tanto, no me encanta salir a discoteca seguido. A mí me gusta poder disfrutar al pleno la compañía de mis amigos mientras bebemos cerveza, vino o copas. Lo que yo más disfruto es ya sea quedar en planes en casa de gente, donde se puede platicar o jugar a juegos de mesa, o ya sea salir a un bar. Y de todos los bares de Segovia, para mi grupo de amigos y para mí, no hay como el Saxo.

El Saxo es un bar relativamente pequeño, que tiene un estilo y ambiente que describen mis amigos como “del barrio de Malasaña”. Es un lugar tranquilo, pero sin perder el ambiente, en el cual la gente viene y va durante toda la noche, siempre trayendo consigo nuevas conversaciones y personas. Es un ambiente donde la iluminación y la música vienen a complementar la plática sin interrumpirla en ningún momento. Adicionalmente, es un lugar que tiene una muy grande variedad de cervezas locales y artesanales las cuales me encantan; mi favorita siendo la Easy Cívica, cerveza del lugar. Esto sin mencionar, claro, el servicio excepcional que proporciona el dueño Cristhian, el cual se ha vuelto un muy buen amigo. Este lugar nos hace sentir a todos como en casa, brindándonos una comodidad y ambiente que no hemos encontrado en ningún otro sitio.

Amongst the things that I am most often asked about by people considering studying in Segovia is what the night life looks like. What does it look like? Is there stuff to do? What does a regular «going out» night look like? In this blog entry, I will attempt to illustrate what Segovia’s night life looks like, in particular for the IE students.

It can be said that «night life» as such generally begins with dinner, although sometimes it can start earlier with a couple of drinks beforehand. Within this beginning of the night, and a tendency in most plans in Segovia, there are two tendencies: first, meeting up in someone’s house, or second, going out with friends. In terms of «going out dinner» plans, most of us go to the places around Plaza Mayor. These usually being either restaurants as such, or tapas bars around near the area. After this, what usually happens is that we go to someone’s apartment to grab some beers. If «the night is young» and we are planning on going out to party, we would then go to another bar next. The most frequented places being el Sito, El Saxo, Karma or la Guagua. From there, we go out to the club, either going first to Destino, or going directly to Canavan’s-Theatre, which we IE students call «Irish».

I am a person which enjoys having conversations when going out, and as such I am not a huge fan of clubs. I prefer being able to fully engage in the company of my friends while we are having a beer, wine, or other drinks. What I mostly enjoy is home plans, where we go to someone’s house and talk or play board games, or if we go out, going to a bar. Of all bars in Segovia, my friends and I prefer el Saxo.

El Saxo is a relatively small bar, that has a style and environment which my friends describe as being a «Malasaña bar». It is a very chill place, without losing it’s ambience, where people and conversations come and go all evening. It’s environment is only enhanced by its lighting and background music, that rather than hindering conversation, it enhances it. This bar, additionally, offers a great variety of local and craftsman beers which I love; my favorite being without doubt Easy Cívica. All of this of course, without mentioning the exceptional service provided by the owner, Cristhian, which has now become a close friend. This place a way of making you feel at home, giving comfort and ambience like no other place in the city.

El cuatrimestre en el extranjero ya ha acabado y toca volver a casa. Me da mucha pena tanto despedirme de Aarhus como de este maravilloso proyecto, pero lo único que me reconforta es saber que aunque me marcho, vuelvo a Segovia con los míos.

Sé que no es un adiós definitivo, pero cómo se despide uno de un lugar tan increíble como es Dinamarca. Es frío, no tiene mucho sol y llueve seis de cada siete días que tiene la semana, pero eso es lo que ha hecho que mi experiencia sea maravillosa. Me quedo con las tazas de té hirviendo que me he tomado, rodeada de los míos, con ese ambiente tan hygge danés, y con la sonrisa de esa gente que siempre está dispuesta a ayudarte aunque sea un día gris. Creo que he crecido personal y profesionalmente, y por eso siempre habrá un huequito en mi corazón para este país. No puedo pedir más.

Y ya para despedirme del todo, quería dar las gracias y mandar un abrazo muy fuerte a todas las personas que han formado parte directa o indirectamente de mis aventuras por allí y de este bonito proyecto, a Dinamarca y a Segovia por todo el cariño y apoyo. Ha sido un honor poder formar parte de este proyecto y poder demostrar a todos la belleza y riqueza cultural de Segovia. Esta ciudad era ya parte de mi vida por los años que me había regalado, pero ahora la quiero de una manera diferente y siempre la llevaré conmigo.

My semester abroad has already finished and now it’s time to go back home. It makes me sad saying goodbye to Aarhus and this wonderful project, but it cheers me up knowing that although I am leaving, I am coming back to Segovia.

I know that this is not a definitive farewell but, how can I say goodbye to such a marvellous place as Denmark? It’s cold, without too much sun and it rains almost six days of the seven that the week has, but all these things have made my experience there so incredible. I will always remember the cups of boiling tea with my “family” there, the Danish hygge ambience, and the people there, who always smiled at me and were willing to help even though it was a grey and rainy day. I reckon I have grown up professionally and personally, and that’s the reason why there is forever going to be a tiny place in my heart for this country. I couldn’t have asked for more.

Finally, I would like to thank and send a huge hug to all those that have been a direct or indirect part of my adventures there and this lovely project, and also to Denmark and Segovia for all the affection and support. It has been an honour to be part of this project and have the opportunity to show the beauty and cultural wealth of Segovia. This city was part of my life because of the years that it had given me, but now I love it in a different way and I will always carry it within me.

Los días recorriendo los pasillos de Aarhus University se han acabado para mí. Pero antes de poner rumbo de vuelta a España, me eché la mochila al hombro y salí junto con una amiga a cerciorarme de que esta universidad no se quedara sin conocer Segovia.

Decoramos todas las plantas de la universidad con posters de la ciudad y dejamos folletos informativos repartidos por los lugares más concurridos de la facultad de Artes, en la que yo he estado estudiando, y también en el Centro Internacional. Además, en el hall de entrada a la universidad presentamos y enseñamos a los alumnos que pasaban por allí la ciudad de Segovia. Acabamos agotadas, pero fue una experiencia muy gratificante.

Como pasamos toda la mañana sin parar, nos dimos el gusto de una rica comida en Aarhus Street Food, ¿y qué mejor lugar para dejar unos cuantos folletos más sobre la gastronomía de Segovia?

The days walking along the corridors of Aarhus University are now over for me. But before going back to Spain, I took my bag and left together with a friend to assure myself that this university didn’t end up without knowledge of Segovia.

We decorated each of the floors of the university with posters of the city and we left some information leaflets scattered all over the most busy places of the faculty of Arts, where I have been studying, and also in the International Centre. What’s more, we used one of the desks in the main entrance of the university to introduce and show the city of Segovia to the students who were there. We ended up exhausted, but it was a very gratifying experience.

As we spent the whole morning nonstop, we deserved a good meal. We went to Aarhus Street Food, what better place to leave some more leaflets of Segovia’s cuisine?
